Trillions of Periodical Cicadas Will Emerge from the Ground This Spring
CBS News reports that trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge from the ground this spring, bringing with them their loud buzzing. The last time these two broods, Brood XIX and XIII, emerged at the same time in 2012, The Washington Post reported.

This year, the emergence of Brood XIII and Brood XIX at the same time creates a much larger cicada span. According to the University of Michigan, Brood XIII will emerge in 13 states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Brood XIX will emerge in seven states: Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio. An interactive map shows the areas where Brood XIX and Brood XIII will emerge in 2024.
