Defiant X Completes 700nm Flight
Paving the Way for Future Army Operations
Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky's Joint Venture Advances Helicopter Technology
NASHVILLE, March 31, 2022 - The Defiant X, a coaxial-rotor helicopter jointly designed by Sikorsky and Boeing, has successfully completed a 700 nautical mile flight. This significant milestone marks a major step forward in the development of next-generation military helicopters and paves the way for future Army operations. The Defiant X is designed to revolutionize the way soldiers are transported to and from war zones. Its unique coaxial-rotor system provides exceptional speed, agility, and maneuverability, allowing it to navigate even the most challenging terrain. The helicopter's advanced avionics and sensors also enhance situational awareness and mission effectiveness. "This flight is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team," said Andy Builta, Sikorsky's vice president of Future Vertical Lift. "The Defiant X is a game-changer for the Army, and we are excited to continue its development and bring it to the battlefield."The Defiant X program is part of the U.S. Army's Future Vertical Lift (FVL) initiative, which aims to modernize the Army's helicopter fleet with faster, more efficient, and more lethal aircraft. The Defiant X is one of several competitors vying for the FVL contract, and its success in this flight test puts it in a strong position to be selected.
The Defiant X's flight capabilities have been proven in a series of rigorous tests, including flights in extreme weather conditions and over challenging terrain. The helicopter has also successfully demonstrated its ability to land in tight spaces and to perform complex maneuvers. These capabilities will enable the Defiant X to transport soldiers to remote and dangerous locations, where traditional helicopters may struggle to operate.
The Defiant X is still in the development phase, but its successful flight test is a major milestone towards its ultimate goal of becoming the next-generation military helicopter. The helicopter is expected to enter service in the mid-2030s and will provide the U.S. Army with a significant advantage in future conflicts.
