Alberta Pulls Support for 2030 Commonwealth Games Bid
Province Cites Escalating Costs
Bid Featured Edmonton, Calgary
The government of Alberta has withdrawn its support for a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games due to rising costs. The proposed bid would have featured the cities of Edmonton and Calgary as co-hosts. The province says the decision was made after a thorough review of the financial implications of hosting the event.
In a statement, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said, "After careful consideration, our government has decided to withdraw our support for a bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. We believe that it is in the best interests of Albertans to prioritize other investments that will benefit our province in the long term."
The decision is a setback for the Commonwealth Games Federation, which is seeking hosts for both the 2026 and 2030 editions of the event. Victoria, British Columbia, had originally been awarded the 2026 Games, but withdrew its bid in 2021 due to financial concerns. The 2026 Games are now expected to be hosted by Hamilton, Ontario.
